Operating a sand mill (also called a horizontal sand mill, bead mill, or horizontal bead mill) safely and efficiently comes down to a clear starting sequence and a few checks before and after each run. Most sand mill damage — stuck rotors, broken media, worn screens — comes from skipping these steps.
This guide covers the 11 points every operator should follow, from pre-start checks to restarting after a long shutdown.
If your mill has a stuck rotor or your media is breaking more often than expected, contact us before restarting. Running a mill with a blocked rotor can damage the motor and the grinding chamber.
Before you press start, confirm the machine and its surroundings are ready.
1. Do the preparations before the test run. Confirm the machine is clean, the material is prepared, and the grinding media is ready.
2. Check whether the installation of each part is firm. Loose parts cause vibration, noise, and premature wear.
3. Check the rotation direction. Each machine should run in the direction indicated by the arrow. Jog the motor briefly to confirm the direction before running at full speed. Running in the wrong direction can damage the rotor and the separator.
4. Check whether the cooling water is flowing smoothly. Cooling water controls chamber temperature. If the flow is weak or blocked, the chamber overheats and grinding efficiency drops.
5. Check the V-belt tension before restarting. Adjust it if needed. After 50 hours of operation, check and adjust it again.

The starting sequence matters. Starting the main motor before the material is flowing can cause the rotor to jam or the media to break.
6. Add grinding media from the top of the cylinder. Do not overfill. Follow the recommended media loading for your chamber volume.
7. Start the feed pump first. Wait until the input material is discharged from the top sieve, then start the main motor. This ensures the chamber is filled with material before the rotor begins to turn, which prevents dry running and rotor damage.

8. If the downtime is long, clean the dried material on the screen. Dried material blocks the screen and reduces flow, which affects grinding efficiency.
9. When cleaning the rotor, rotate it only slightly and intermittently. The rotor and grinding media move quickly in the cleaning liquid, which can wear or break the media. Slow, intermittent rotation is safer.
10. When using new grinding media, sieve it first. Remove foreign objects and impurity fragments before loading. Contaminated media can scratch the chamber and damage the rotor.
If your screen blocks frequently or your media breaks often, the cause is usually not the media itself. Contact us with your operating conditions and we will help you identify the real cause.
11. After a long shutdown, do not start the mill forcibly. When the mill has been stopped for a long time, solid particles and grinding media settle, and the rotor may be stuck tightly. This is especially serious with viscous materials at low temperature, where the "braking" effect is more pronounced.
If the jog motor cannot start the mill, do not force it. Instead:
Add a small amount of solvent that can dissolve the material
Turn the main shaft pulley by hand ("cranking") to loosen the material
Wait until the material is dissolved and loose, then start the mill
Forcing a stuck rotor can damage the electrical system and the equipment. A few minutes of manual loosening is far cheaper than a motor repair.
