A three roll mill (also called a triple roller mill) is safe to operate when the basic rules are followed. Most accidents and roller damage come from four causes: running without cooling water, foreign objects entering the rollers, uneven roller temperature, and operators leaving the machine unattended. This guide covers the 13 rules that prevent these problems.
If your rollers are already damaged or your motor has stalled, contact us before restarting. Running a damaged three roll mill can turn a minor repair into a full roller replacement.
Cooling water controls roller temperature and keeps the roller diameter stable. Without it, the rollers expand unevenly and the gap changes during operation.
Rule 1. If the film in the middle of the roller is thin and the two ends are thick, the roller may be convex in the middle. Increase the cooling water.
Rule 2. If the film at both ends is thin and the middle is thick, adjust the amount of cooling water.
Rule 3. Driving without cooling water is strictly prohibited.
Uneven film thickness is the earliest sign of a temperature problem. If you see it, correct the cooling before adjusting anything else. If the problem continues after adjusting cooling, send us your roller temperature readings and we will help you diagnose.
The gap between two rollers is very narrow. A metal block or hard particle entering the gap can squeeze the roller surface or damage other parts.
Rule 4. Never allow foreign objects (such as metal blocks) to enter between the two rollers. If a foreign object enters accidentally, stop the machine immediately and remove it. Do not try to continue running.
Rule 11. Operators should always watch for debris on the rollers. If any is present, stop the machine immediately to avoid quality problems and safety accidents.
A single metal particle can scratch a hardened steel roller beyond repair. If your rollers already have surface damage, contact us with photos and we will assess whether they can be reconditioned or need replacement.
Rollers expand linearly as they heat up. If the gap is not adjusted during operation, the rollers can jam or even stall the motor.
Rule 5. Adjust the front and rear rollers at any time during operation. Because of linear expansion, a gap that is correct when cold may become too tight when hot. If the rollers jam, the motor may brake suddenly and cause an accident.
Rule 6. Do not press the baffle too tightly. Add lubricating oil that matches the material at any time. A baffle that is too tight wears out quickly.
Rule 7. Watch the bearing temperature at both ends of the roller. It should generally not exceed 100°C.
If your motor has stalled or your bearings run hot, stop operation and contact us. These are early warning signs that can lead to major damage if ignored.
Rule 8. Before operation, check the power cord, the switch buttons, and whether cooling circulating water is available. If everything is normal, the machine can be started.
Rule 10. Fix the oil storage tank in place during operation to avoid oil spillage.

Rule 9. During operation, watch for any abnormality and stop the machine immediately if one appears.
Rule 12. When an operator needs to leave the post, someone must take his place. Never leave a running three roll mill unattended.
Rule 13. After production is completed, clean the rollers in time, clean up the surrounding area, and turn off the relevant power switches.
Before start:
Check power cord and switch buttons
Confirm cooling circulating water is available
Check for debris on the rollers
Confirm the oil storage tank is fixed
During operation:
Watch film thickness at the middle and both ends
Adjust cooling water if film is uneven
Adjust front and rear rollers as temperature rises
